Terms of Service — Yukigo

Who we are

Yukigo is an app for learning Japanese, provided by YUKIGO LTD, a company registered in England and Wales under number 17399318, registered office 71-75 Shelton Street, Covent Garden, London WC2H 9JQ, United Kingdom ("we"). Contact: support@yukigo.app

By using the app or the yukigo.app website you accept these terms. If you do not accept them, do not use the service.

A young app

Yukigo is a young app. This means: some features may change, be discontinued or contain errors; the service may be temporarily suspended; despite our efforts to prevent it, data loss is possible. We recommend not entrusting Yukigo with data you cannot afford to lose.

The service

Yukigo offers lessons, exercises, reviews and tools for studying Japanese (including JLPT exam preparation). The content is for educational purposes: we do not guarantee that you will pass any exam or achieve specific results.

Free and Yukigo Pro

Yukigo can be used for free: all the lessons, with a daily limit on new ones; unlimited reviews, including listening to words; a taste of reading, listening, the JLPT, pronunciation and the diary corrected by Yuki; and a certain number of questions a day to Yuki. The limits of the free tier are shown in the app and may change.

Yukigo Pro is an optional subscription that removes these limits: unlimited new lessons, all the reading passages and listening tracks, the full JLPT mock exams with the plan towards your exam date, pronunciation practice every day, the diary corrected by Yuki with one page a day and more questions a day to Yuki. What it includes is shown in the app and may change over time; if a change significantly reduces what Pro includes, we will tell you in advance and you can cancel before it applies.

Prices, payment and renewal

The available plans are yearly and monthly. The price is shown in the app before purchase, in your store's currency, and may vary from country to country.
Purchase and payment take place only through the App Store (Apple) or Google Play: they handle the payment, issue the receipts and hold your payment details, under their own terms. We neither see nor store your card details.
The subscription renews automatically at the end of each period, at the same price, until you cancel it. The amount is charged to your store account when the period ends, according to the store's rules (Apple may charge it within the preceding 24 hours).
You can cancel at any time from your store's subscription settings (in the app you will find "Manage subscription"). Cancellation takes effect at the end of the period already paid for: until then, Pro stays active. Uninstalling the app does not cancel the subscription.
If the price of an ongoing subscription changes, we will tell you in advance through the store, according to its rules; where the law requires it, an increase applies only with your consent, and you can always cancel before it takes effect.

Free trial

The yearly plan may include a 7-day free trial: during the trial you pay nothing and, unless you cancel it before it ends (on the App Store, at least 24 hours before), the subscription starts and the yearly price is charged. The trial is available only once per store account: if you have already used it, the app says so and the plan starts as a paid subscription straight away.

Founder price

Those who were studying with Yukigo before Pro arrived may receive a period of Pro as a gift and a founder price valid for a limited time, shown in the app: a reduced price for the first year (yearly plan) or for the first 3 months (monthly plan). After that period, the subscription continues at the full price then in force, renewing automatically, unless you cancel it. The founder price cannot be combined with the free trial or with discount codes.

Discount codes

We may offer discount codes, for example through schools or creators who recommend Yukigo. A code gives the discount shown when you use it, on the first year of the yearly plan. To use it, tap "Redeem a code" in the app: on Android you enter it in the app; on iPhone the App Store window opens for you to enter it (it is an Apple offer code). A code cannot be combined with the free trial or with the founder price, can be used once per account, may have an expiry date or a maximum number of uses, and cannot be sold or exchanged for money. After the discounted period, the subscription continues at the full price then in force, renewing automatically, unless you cancel it. If you use a creator's code, the creator receives a commission on your subscription (see the privacy policy).

Refunds and right of withdrawal

Refund requests are handled through the store you bought from, under its terms: Apple for the App Store, Google for Google Play. If you live in the European Union or the United Kingdom, you also have the statutory right of withdrawal for distance contracts (14 days from purchase): for purchases made through the store, you exercise it with the store itself, which applies it under its own terms; if the service started straight away with your consent, any refund may be reduced in proportion to what you have already used, within the limits of the law. Nothing in this section limits the mandatory rights you have as a consumer.

Restoring purchases, accounts and devices

The subscription is tied to your store account (Apple or Google) and applies on all the devices where you use Yukigo with that account, even without a Yukigo account. If you do not see it as active, use "Restore purchases" in the app. A gift period or a reserved offer (such as the founder price), on the other hand, is tied to the Yukigo profile it was assigned to; a gift period does not renew by itself and involves no charge. Deleting your Yukigo profile or account does not cancel the subscription either: you always cancel through the store.

If Pro does not work

If a Pro feature is unavailable through our fault for an extended period, write to us: we will find a remedy, which may include an extension of the subscription or a refund through the store, within the limits of the law.

Account

An account is optional. If you create one, you agree to: provide accurate information; keep your credentials confidential; use a single personal account. You are responsible for the activity carried out with your account. You can delete it at any time from the app settings (see also the privacy policy).

Acceptable use

You agree not to: use the service for unlawful purposes; interfere with its operation or attempt to access other people's systems or data; extract, bulk-copy or redistribute the learning content; decompile or reverse engineer the app, except where mandatory law allows it; use the AI tutor or the diary for purposes other than studying Japanese or attempt to circumvent its limitations; choose a display name that is offensive, misleading or infringes the rights of others.

In the event of serious or repeated violations we may suspend or close your account, notifying you when reasonably possible.

AI tutor (Yuki)

The tutor's answers are generated by artificial intelligence and may contain errors or inaccuracies: verify them before relying on them; they are not professional advice. Questions are subject to a daily limit, which depends on your plan (free or Pro), is shown in the app and may change. Please do not include personal data (yours or anyone else's) in your questions to the tutor.

The same goes for the diary corrected by Yuki: corrections, replies and questions are generated by artificial intelligence and may contain errors. You can write at most one page a day; without Pro, the number of pages in total is limited, as shown in the app; a page you delete still counts as written; these limits may change. In the diary you can tell the story of your day, but please do not write sensitive data or data about other identifiable people.

Intellectual property

Yukigo's content (lessons, explanations, exercises, artwork, the Yuki mascot, the name and the logo) is protected and remains ours or that of its respective owners. We grant you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable licence to use it only for your own study. Some third-party components (for example kanji data and stroke-order paths) are used under their respective open licences, listed in the app's "Credits" section.

Your content and feedback

It remains yours, including your diary pages, which we use only for the diary itself, as described in the privacy policy. If you send us feedback, suggestions or reports, you allow us to use them freely to improve Yukigo, with no obligation towards you.

Warranties and liability

The service is provided "as is", with no guarantee of continuous availability, absence of errors or fitness for a particular purpose — to the extent permitted by law. Also to the extent permitted by law, we are not liable for indirect damages (for example: loss of study data, failure to pass an exam). Nothing in these terms excludes or limits rights that the law grants you in a mandatory way, including the consumer rights of your country of residence.

Changes to the service and to these terms

We may change the service (especially in this early phase) and these terms. We announce substantial changes to these terms on this page before they take effect, with the date from which they apply: at least 7 days before, or 30 days before if they are to your disadvantage; previous versions remain available at the bottom of the page. If you do not agree, you can stop using Yukigo and cancel your subscription before that date; if you keep using Yukigo afterwards, the change counts as accepted. For subscription prices, the rules in "Prices, payment and renewal" apply.

Governing law

These terms are governed by Portuguese law, without prejudice to the mandatory rights you hold as a consumer in your country of habitual residence.

Minors

Yukigo is not intended for children under 14. If you are a minor, use the service with the consent of a parent or guardian.
